5 Boudoir Misconceptions

Boudoir photography has quickly become one of my favorite genres to shoot. I love everything about it, but there are some misconceptions about boudoir photography that tend to scare people away. Today I am sharing 5 common boudoir misconceptions and the truth that should replace them.

1. You have to have a perfect figure to do a boudoir shoot:

First of all there is no such thing as a “perfect figure”. Every woman has flaws and insecurities about their body. Before each session I ask my clients what their favorite and least favorite body parts are and I have never had a client that didn’t have something about themselves that they didn’t like. Boudoir photography is about embracing everything beautiful about YOU! It’s about creating beautiful pieces of art that showcase the curves and lines that make you a woman. So, embrace the beautiful body that you have NOW and stop waiting for the unattainable “perfect figure”.

2. Boudoir photography mean nudity and trashy lingerie:

If you were to poll 100 people and ask them what boudoir photography was to them you would more than likely get comments such as “trashy lingerie”, “half naked women” and “borderline pornography”.  Just like with any other genre of photography there are different styles for shooting the same thing. While some photographers will choose to shoot racier shots, there are other photographers (like myself) that choose to shoot classier, more romantic shots. You don’t have to show a lot of skin to be sexy!

3. Boudoir sessions are only for women who have someone to share them with:

Who said you have to give these images to anyone? Don’t you deserve to have beautiful photos of yourself that you can look at anytime you want to feel good about yourself. While there are a lot of women that will book a boudoir session to give as a gift to their significant other I have worked with women who just want to do something special for themselves. They want to celebrate a milestone birthday, a new phase in their lives or just embrace their womanhood. These are usually the sessions that are the most fun because they are doing what they feel is sexy instead of what someone else sees as sexy.

4. There is no point in taking photos that you can’t share or hang on your wall:

While you may not want to hang your boudoir photos over the fireplace in your family room there are definitely ways to display your images tastefully. The most popular method is through albums that can be discreetly placed on a shelf or on a bed side table. If you want to get a little more bold you can even hang some of your photos in your bedroom. I had a client print a few of her images on metal prints and create an art wall in her master bedroom. BUT, my favorite idea to date has been when a client told me that she was redecorating her master bath and wanted to use images from her boudoir session as part of her “me” space. She wanted a daily reminder of just how beautiful she really is. Love it!!

5. Boudoir sessions have to take place inside a boring studio or hotel room:

There are no rules when it comes to your boudoir session. No one says that you HAVE to shoot your session indoors. Most women choose an indoor location because they don’t feel comfortable wearing lingerie in an outdoor setting or because they don’t want to deal with the elements of nature during their shoot. However, if you are looking for something really unique and different then an outdoor shoot might be perfect for you….and the results could be AMAZING!

We, as women, don’t take enough time to revel in our womanhood , enjoy or acknowledge our beauty or the freedom of indulgence, yet each of us deserves those special moments of feeling free and bold enough to be the woman we are inside. Boudoir photography encourages us to indulge in those moments of expression and makes a great gift whether it is for yourself or someone else. Boudoir Photography is highly regarded as Fine art photography and is all about capturing the beautiful you in ways that will have you appreciating the woman you are, and perhaps falling back in love with yourself. If you’re slightly nervous, but have always wanted to do a boudoir session, there’s no better time than now. There is no valid reason to wait. You’re perfect and beautiful just as you are!
