Grapevine senior photography - tutu

{DIY Tutu} – Grapevine Senior Photography

Sep 30, 2014

I love crafting….but I am also slightly ADD so I REALLY love crafts that don’t take forever to finish. That’s why when I came across the tutorial for a “no-sew tutu” I knew it was meant for me.

The vision I have for my photography business includes providing clients with a complete experience from hair and make-up to a fun, fabulous wardrobe to choose from. An adult version of a tutu sounded like a really fun addition to my growing wardrobe collection and thus began my DIY tutu project. I made a trip to the local fabric store to purchase my materials – yards and yards (20 yds to be exact) of fun pink tulle and elastic.

Step 1 – Roll out the tulle and cut it into strips. Mine were about 12in in width. I have a very large kitchen island which helped make this part a little easier, but a dinning room table or the floor works well too. (The fudge brownie from Panera Bread was a pretty good helper too) 😉

Step 2 – Cut a piece of elastic about 2-3in larger than your waist (or the waist of the person the tutu is for). If you are going to use this for just one person, you can sew or tie the elastic into a circle. I left mine open so it could be adjusted for various sizes in photo shoots. You could also use ribbon if you wanted to have a cute bow in the back.

Step 3 – Take the strips of tulle and tie them to the elastic using the “loop and pull method” – no, that is not the technical term but it sounds good 🙂

Step 4- Continue to tie the tulle around the elastic until you either run out of tulle or run out of room on your elastic.

Step 5- Once you are finished it doesn’t hurt to let a cute little model try it out for you!

I made this specifically for use in senior sessions and it just so happened that I had a senior session this past weekend. She was awesome and didn’t even think twice when I pulled this fluffy creation out of my car and said “I have a vision!”. It turned out awesome! I might even make another one in a darker color for future sessions.
