A girl and a zoo….my baby turns 2! {April Blog Circle f/11}

May 5, 2014

I am running a little behind this month on my blog circle post, but with good reason. The end of April is always super busy for several reasons. It is the time of year when STAAR testing takes place in the public schools here in Texas so I was busy tutoring and testing kiddos. On top of all that, Brinley’s birthday is May 1st so the end of April means party planning and present shopping. So I apologize for the late post.

This month’s blog circle topic/theme was f/11. In basic terms that means that the camera is set to an aperture that closes the opening that lets in the light so that less light gets in. It also affects the amount of an image that is in focus. With an aperture of f/11, a majority of the image is in focus. Some of you may be thinking “why wouldn’t you want everything in focus?”.  Have you ever seen one of those shots where the person’s face is in focus and everything else seems to be a creamy blur, drawing your eye straight to the face….that is done using a lower aperture and that is where the creativity in photography comes into play. I won’t bore you with all the technical details, instead let’s get straight to the photos for this month!

For Brinley’s 2nd birthday we decided to take her to the zoo. She was so excited and the whole way there she kept saying “I go see aminals!” I figured it was the perfect opportunity to not only capture her birthday adventure, but take some images at f/11 for this post.

It was a beautiful day and I was looking forward to a quiet stroll through the zoo. It was after all a Thursday morning so it shouldn’t be too busy….WRONG! When we pulled up there were about 50 school buses in the parking lot! Yikes!
There were groups of kids everywhere, but luckily it is a large enough zoo that when they went left we could go right and avoid too many crowds. Brinley took some time warming up to the idea of seeing the animals in real life. She kept asking to see the zebra and elephant but as soon as we got close she hid.
Once she got comfortable with the crazy sights and sounds she had a blast. We saw all kinds of animals and ten got to play around in an old stagecoach. Happy Birthday my sweet girl! I hope you had a great day!
Head over to Jessica’s blog to check out her post for this month’s blog circle. She gives you a great visual comparison and explanation of the different f-stops and what they do!
