Do What You Love!

Jul 25, 2013

Last week my husband, daughter and I took a break from unpacking boxes and organizing to head to the beach. It was a nice, relaxing break from the craziness of moving into a new house. One of the things I intended to do on this trip was take some time to read a book or two. One of the books I read (The School of Essential Ingredients) had a character that I really connected with. She was a young woman who was struggling to find her identity outside of her role as a wife and a mother. She had a small role in the book, but one line that really hit home with me came when an older woman was talking to her and asked her “What do you love to do that is just for you?”. She went on to explain that we all need to find the one thing that makes us happy, not something we do to make others happy, something that is just for ourselves and DO IT!

There are several things that I love. I love working out (I know…I am crazy!). I love good wine, desserts, cheese and fresh fruit (I work out so I can have these things). I love spending time with my family and friends and I love reading a good book. These are are all things I plan to make a lot more time for.

The other big love in my life is photography, which brings to the main topic of this post. Photography has always been a love of mine, and it is why I got into the photography business. I get to capture more than just moments for people (and myself). I get to capture memories. When I look at pictures I don’t just see the one single moment frozen in time. I am reminded of all the things that were going on at that moment.

When I look back on this picture of Brinley at the beach, I won’t just remember her running towards me  with a smile on her face. I will remember how she ran straight for the ocean the first time we put her down. How she laughed as each wave hit her. The mounds of sand that collected in her shoes and swimsuit. This photo, and all the others I took last week, hold a whole lot more than just one moment frozen in time.
Next time you are with your family, take out some old pictures and see what memories they spark. I bet you will hear stories that had been long forgotten and ones that you never even knew about. Then, go out and take more pictures (better yet….let me do it for you). Capture the memories going on right now so that in 5, 10 or 25 years you can relive all those moments that tend to get lost in time.
And, because I can’t resist, here are a few of the memories I captured on our trip this year!
