The year was 1995
The movie Clueless was a teen sensation (As if!)
Plaid skirts and baby-tees were all the rage
Teenage girls everywhere were mourning the break-up of New Kids on The Block
TLC & Coolio were at the top of the music charts
The “Rachel” hair cut was a must have
and the 14 year old version of myself only wanted one thing…..Glamour Shots!
Anyone who frequented a mall during the 1990’s knows all about Glamour Shots! Poster sized images of glammed up women with big hair and shiny outfits beckoned you from the food court or nearest Gadzooks store.
Glamour Shots studios convinced us that all we needed to infuse a little glamor into our lives was metallic fabric or sting of pearls, a cowboy hat (or sailor hat in my case), and a blurred camera lens, prompting women everywhere to whip out their faux leather checkbook wallets for a piece of the action. Glamour Shots created the sense that anyone could be a supermodel but took a distinctly one-size-fits-all approach to their model-style photo shoots, meaning their stylists were probably only trained in a single technique.
Fortunately for women everywhere Glamour photography has come a long way over the past several years. These days most photographers (myself included) call them Beauty Sessions and they are the latest trend in women’s portraiture.
Beauty Sessions are more than just an excuse to dress up and get your hair and make-up done. They are a way to express your true beauty and show off your personal style. As a woman who has frequently struggled with self esteem and body image (honestly, what woman hasn’t?) I love the idea of spending an afternoon getting pampered with hair, make-up and beautiful clothing and having gorgeous images as a keepsake.
There are tons of reason why women book Beauty Sessions. I have seen women book sessions for special occasions (birthday, anniversary), personal branding, mother-daughter days, pre-wedding shoots, post-baby shoots or just because. The reasons to book a session are endless, but in the end the best reason is because you deserve to look and feel amazing!
After spending an afternoon in my studio this is what Elizabeth had to say about her experience:
“Thank you so much for yesterday! I had a great time and it was so needed to feel like a woman instead of a mom/wife for a change. I am amazed at how beautiful I looked and can’t thank you enough for using your creative vision and talent to help me see that!”
I hear similar comment from women all the time. We get so caught up in being a wife/mom/employee (insert your own title here) that we forget what it feels like to just me a woman.
