My business wouldn’t be where it is today without the advice and guidance of the mentors I have worked with. As entrepreneurs we tend to think we can do it all on our own (or that we have to). In reality, building a successful business takes a village. Having the right people in your corner cheering you on and pushing you to be your best can be the defining factor in whether your business succeeds or fails.
So what can a mentor do for your business and how do you go about finding one? I am going to answer all your burning questions below…
1.What are the benefits of having a mentor?
Where do I even begin!?! I believe that the biggest benefit in having a mentor is not having to reinvent the wheel. Working with someone who has been where you are, and has already figured out what works, and doesn’t, will not only save you time but can save you money. Having a mentor can accelerate your learning getting your the results you are looking for faster than if you tried to figure it out on your own.
2. What are some unexpected Benefits of having a mentor?
I think a lot of times business owners underestimate the benefit of having someone to offer emotional and mental support. Building a business can be lonely, frustrating and scary at times. Having someone to go through the highs and lows with can be more helpful than you might have imagined.
3. What should you expect from a mentor?
Every mentor is different, they have their own experiences, style and personality, BUT you can always expect someone that is going to want to see you succeed. When you succeed, they look good too!
4. How do you find a mentor right for your business?
The first thing you want to do is identify the area of your business you want to focus on the most. If you want to improve your marketing skills then look for someone who is a pro at marketing. If you want someone in your field, then look for someone who has been successful in your same genre.
In addition to finding someone that is successful in the area you want to improve, you need to find someone you get along with. You are going to spend a lot of time with your mentor so you want to make sure the two of you “click”. Take time to meet with several mentors until you find the one that feels right for you.
5. If my business is doing well, will I still benefit from a mentor?
I don’t care how successful your business is, there is always someone more successful than you and someone you can learn from. The moment you start thinking you know it all is the moment your business stalls.
