Fall Photo Shoot Fashion

Fall Photo Shoot Fashion {DFW Portrait Photography)

Oct 4, 2014

Fall is here! The weather is cooling off, the leaves are starting to turn and Starbucks has the pumpkin spice latte on the menu again. I love fall and I especially love fall fashion. Rich jewel tones, warm cozy sweaters, fun, flirty scarves and tall boots fill my closet. Fall is also one of the busiest times for me as a photographer. This is the time of year when family sessions and senior portraits fill my calendar (ready to book your own session? Click here to contact me!).

The number one question I get asked is “What should I wear for my session?” In this post I will share some of my favorite looks, trends and tips for getting photo ready this fall! So grab your pumpkin latte, curl up in your favorite sweater, and enjoy!

#1 – Colors:

One of the best things about fall fashion is the amazing colors. Summer has the bright, bold patterns. Winter gets the dark and brooding neutrals and Spring has the market on pastels, but Fall gets the best colors of all in my opinion: JEWEL TONES!  These are the colors that make me happy. Rich, warm hues of magenta, blue, green, orange and yellow all working together to resemble a perfect fall day! This is one of the only times that I feel like I can pull off wearing yellow or orange, but for some reason, in the fall, it just works.

#2- Layers:

Cool mornings and warm afternoons can cause trouble when trying to decide what to wear each day. This is where layering comes in handy. Not only is it functional, but it can add a pop of color or texture to a basic outfit. The key to layering is to keep it simple. If you have a patterned shirt then layer a solid colored jacket or cardigan over it. If your shirt is solid or neutral then you can add a funky pattered jacket or a fun texture on top. For a more sophisticated layering look put a sweater over a tailored button down.

#3- Leggings

Ah, leggings! The next best thing to wearing your pajamas in public….only much cuter! Leggings can be a bit tricky though, so here are a few DO’s and DON’Ts to help you out.

DO: Wear opaque leggings- we don’t want everyone knowing what your underwear look like

DO: Invest in a quality pair of leggings that fit well

DO: wear leggings that come all the way up to the smallest part of your waist to avoid muffin tops

DO: wear long shirts or long tank tops under shorter shirts. Just do it!

DO: dress up your leggings with a nice pair of boots or even a dress!

•DO NOT wear see through leggings.

•DO NOT buy that pair at target because they are $5

•DO NOT wear leggings that are too tight

•DO NOT wear leggings as pants. Just don’t. It’s awkward for everyone involved.

Not only do I love the comfort level of leggings, but I also love that they allow me to show off my fall boots. This fall try out a fun pair of patterned pair like the ones pictured below!

#4- Accessories

This might be my favorite part of a fall outfit. Accessories can take a basic outfit and turn it into something awesome! One of my go-to accessories for fall are scarves. I love all the different patterns and textures and they are so easy to throw on with leggings, boots and a basic top. Fall Photo Shoot Fashion- scarves

Jewelry is another easy way to dress up an outfit quickly. I tend to stick with basic colors in my closet and add texture and fun with my jewelry. Some of my favorites for this fall are shown below:

I am loving these gold earrings, leather bracelet and leaf necklace from Magnolia Mom Blog

My very talented cousin Rory Ashton has a very successful jewelry business and her earrings are amazing! These Sea Dragon- Cluster Earring from Mermaid Collection are probably my favorite.

#5- Don’t forget the kids

Fall fashion is not just for adults, kids (even the littlest ones) can look great this season. One my favorite looks is this adorable fedora, suspenders and bow tie from Paisley Pig Boutique.  I am also dying over the yellow dress and hat from My Little Jules online boutique.
