Mindset In your photography marketing

How a Negative Mindset Could Be Sabotaging Your Photography Business (And What to Do About It)

Jun 25, 2025

You’ve invested in the gear. You’ve studied your craft. You’ve even posted consistently on social media like the internet told you to…

But you’re still not seeing the growth you hoped for.

Here’s a hard truth wrapped in love:

It might not be your pricing, your presets, or your Instagram game.

It might be your mindset.

As a coach for photographers, I’ve seen this time and time again—photographers with all the tools but none of the traction. And most of the time? It comes down to the stories they’re telling themselves.

Let’s unpack what that looks like—and how to change it.

What a Negative Mindset Actually Looks Like

This isn’t always the dramatic, doom-and-gloom kind of negativity. Nope, it’s often subtle. It hides in the quiet thoughts we don’t say out loud:

  • “I’m not as good as [insert name here].” Maybe you scroll Instagram and instantly feel like you’re behind. That wedding photographer with the dream clients or the family photographer with a six-month waitlist… you see their success and assume there’s no room for yours.
  • “I have to lower my prices to get booked.” You’re afraid to charge what you’re worth because deep down, you don’t believe people will pay you for what you offer.
  • “That idea probably won’t work for me anyway.” You talk yourself out of trying new things—email marketing, mini sessions, SEO—before you even begin.

These thoughts are sneaky. But left unchecked, they quietly shape how you show up in your business (or don’t).

How Your Thoughts Shape Your Business

Mindset is more than just woo-woo talk. It directly affects:

  • Your marketing energy: If you don’t believe in your offer, your dream clients can feel that. Your captions sound uncertain. Your offers lack excitement. And suddenly, you’re wondering why no one’s clicking “book now.”
  • The risks you take (or don’t): A confident mindset leads to brave action. Without it, you’ll avoid the things that push your business forward—networking, raising your prices, showing your face online.
  • Your client experience: If you’re operating from a place of fear or scarcity, you may feel overextended, resentful, or burnt out… and that energy seeps into how you serve.

3 Ways to Reset Your Mindset

1. Catch the thought – Rewrite the story

I recently had a moment where I caught myself thinking, “Ugh, everyone’s already offering that. What’s the point?”

Instead of spiraling, I paused and reframed it to:

“Yes, others are doing it — and so can I. My people will choose me for me.”

That tiny mindset shift? Game-changer.

Start noticing when the negative narrative shows up and ask:

“What’s a more empowering version of this story?”

2. Celebrate small wins

You don’t have to book five clients a week to be successful.

Did you finally write that blog post? Send an email? Try something new? That’s progress. And it deserves to be acknowledged. Momentum builds with small, consistent wins.

3. Surround yourself with possibility

Whether it’s listening to this podcast, joining a coaching program, or even curating your Instagram feed—make sure your environment fuels your belief.

Stay close to voices and people who remind you that success is possible (because it is 💛).

Your mindset is like the foundation of your business.

If it’s cracked, everything else wobbles. But when it’s strong? Your strategy has somewhere solid to land.

So if you’ve been feeling stuck lately, take a step back and ask:

“Is this really a marketing problem… or a mindset one?”
