I often talk to photographers in Facebook groups, at speaking events and inside my Focused Photographer Lab coaching membership, about social media…and I hear the same sentiments over and over again
“Social media doesn’t work for me”
“I get so burned out by social media”
“I’m tired of spending so much time creating content that no one sees”
I can understand all of those feelings because I have felt them as well. However, once I started to change my mindset around my expectations of social media, my relationship with social media changed…for the better.
Now it’s your turn to shift your mindset. Let’s look at a few areas that can help you create a healthy relationship with social media.
- Expectation vs. Reality: If you expect to share a post and get tons of people asking to work with you, then you are going to walk away disappointed every.single.time! When you start to look at your social media posts as conversations starters, ice breakers with a new audience or a way to educate your audience you will start to feel like your posts are actually doing what they are intended to do. And if someone books your based on your posts then it’s a fun bonus!
- Know Your Platform: I always recommend choosing one (maybe two) platforms to focus on. This allows you really get to know your platform of choice and figure out how to adjust your content to bet suit the needs and wants of that particular audience. For example: If I am posting content to Facebook I will create longer captions that are value-based or story-centered because that platform (and its users) prefer longer format content. If I were to post the same content on Instagram I would need to make it short and easy to consume, because that platform and audience want quick content.
- Adaptability: The social media landscape is constantly evolving, and what worked yesterday may not work tomorrow. Be open to trying new things, experimenting with different types of content, and analyzing what resonates with your audience.
If you’re intrigued and want to dive deeper into these topics, I highly recommend giving the full podcast episode a listen. I shared more examples, insights, and practical tips that can help you navigate the world of social media with more clarity and purpose.
